The English village of Congham in Norfolk has celebrated the annual championship since the 1960s.

“Ready, steady, slow,” was the cry as 150 snails took part in the World Snail Racing Championships in England.

The English village of Congham in Norfolk has celebrated the annual championship since the 1960s, plucking snails from the garden and pitting them against each other.

Larry, owned by Tara Beasley, was this year’s winner, gliding across the 33cm course in two minutes and 20 seconds.

After taking first place, Ms Beasley was awarded a silver tankard stuffed with lettuce leaves for Larry.
