The mythical stallion Pegasus had wings to bear him aloft, but normally horses have to be content keeping their hooves on the ground.

One steed was grateful to take to the Californian skies this weekend, however, after it got into difficulties and needed to be airlifted to safety.

It was airlifted to safety by rescue officials on Sunday (June 4) in California. The injured horse was harnessed and airlifted to a clearing where it received further assistance. The dramatic rescue took place in in Calabasas, California, a Los Angeles suburb.

A veterinarian was on hand to sedate the horse while it was harnessed.

The nature of the horse’s injury or the cause were unknown.
