More than 1,000 bottles of shampoo are being recalled in the United States after the manufacturer discovered they may be contaminated with a bacteria that can cause serious infections.
The bottles of Tec Italy Shampoo Totale were distributed in the US through New York and California, but may have been sent on to other states, according to parent company Henkel, which is headquartered in Germany and also makes products like Dial soap and Snuggle fabric softener.
The recall was issued from the company’s Mexico branch, and applies to 1,068 bottles.
What happens if you are exposed to the bacteria?
Henkel said the shampoo may contain Klebsiella oxytoca, a healthy bacteria normally found in the gut but exposure outside of the intestines can cause eye, nose, and skin infections and more commonly spreads in medical settings.
People with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of adverse reactions, the company warned.
No health problems have been reported so far, the company said. It noticed the potential contamination after finding the bacteria in the shampoo during a microbiological analysis.
“Consumers who experience symptoms, or have any medical questions associated with this recall, should consult a physician immediately,” the company said.
Which products are being recalled?
The recall applies to shampoo bottles packaged in green 1 litre plastic bottles. The Universal Product Code (UPC) – which is printed on the back of the bottle and helps identify the products – is 7501438375850.
