"I'm saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base," David McGuinty said in a statement, identifying the location as Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said a "serious incident creating a major fire" had occurred at the site.

"Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected. We are working closely with the Government of Alberta and local authorities," he wrote in a post on social media.

Further information will be released in the "coming hours and days," McGuinty added.

According to the Canadian government, Wainwright is one of the "busiest" army bases in the country and is home to the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre as well as the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre.

Wainwright is around 210 kilometres east of Edmonton - the capital of Alberta - and 110 kilometres southwest of Lloydminster.
