Israel launched a daylight attack Saturday on Iran’s capital, Israel Katz, the Israeli Defence Minister, announced early Saturday as media reports say the United States is participating in the strikes.
The attack was carried out "to remove threats," according to a statement from Katz. The statement added that a 'special and permanent state of emergency was declared across Israel.
According to reports, the first apparent strike happened near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
A cloud of smoke was seen rising from the city’s downtown, and three explosions were reportedly heard in downtown Tehran, Iranian media reports.
It wasn’t immediately clear what the target was, but the attack comes as the United States has assembled a vast fleet of fighter jets and warships in the region to try to pressure Iran into a deal over its nuclear program.
