Commuter rail services across Catalonia were suspended after a train crash near Barcelona killed one and injured 37. Heavy rainfall likely caused the derailment.

A commuter train near Barcelona ploughed into the rubble of a collapsed wall on Tuesday, killing one and injuring dozens in Spain's second deadly rail accident in days.

The train collided with a retaining wall which fell onto the track between Gelida and Sant Sadurní.

The accident occurred as heavy storms battered Cartalonia.

The victim of the Tuesday-night crash was a trainee train driver, regional authorities said.

Of the 37 people affected, five were seriously injured. Six others were in less serious condition, emergency services said. Most of the injured had ridden in the first train car.

The suspension of commuter trains Wednesday morning caused significant traffic jams on roads leading into Barcelona. Regional authorities in Catalonia asked people to reduce unnecessary travel and companies to allow remote work while the disruptions continued.
