Un-baa-lievable! Sheep make their way through German city as herd moved to winter pastures

Video. Sheep herds move through German cities for winter pastures

Updated:

Around 600 sheep moved through downtown Nuremberg on Sunday as part of an annual tradition marking their journey to winter pastures.

Pedestrians in the German city of Nuremberg stepped aside on Sunday as about 600 bleating sheep were herded through the historic center on their way to winter quarters.

The annual tradition sees shepherd Thomas Gackstatte lead his flock to new pastures outside the city, after spending summer months keeping grass short in nearby meadows.

Nuremberg isn’t the only German city using sheep as natural lawnmowers; they also graze in parts of Berlin, Potsdam, Augsburg and Ulm.

Their slow grazing supports insects, boosts biodiversity and reduces mowing costs for local authorities.
