Set against the backdrop of Qingdao’s dynamic landscape.

Inside the Conson Stadium an excited crowd awaited the action…

There was delight for China in the first final of the day as ZHUANG Wenna took -48kg gold in her home city, when Mary Dee VARGAS LEY was judged to have illegally attacked her supporting leg.

I am very happy today. I was born in Qingdao, I grew up and trained here. My coaches all came here today so I didn’t want to lose. Four years ago I watched my sister compete in this arena with many strong competitors, which was a great memory. I tried my best, and I got the gold medal.

At -60kg, Japan’s KONDO Hayato came through as victor in a close battle with LEE Harim as the Korean was penalised for passivity.

Today went really well, I think because I was able to focus on my strengths, and my offense, looking for Ippon in all my matches.
