Rescue efforts stalled as second cavity emerges a day after sinkhole traps truck driver

Video. Truck swallowed by sinkhole in Japan, with rescue efforts complicated by second hole

Updated:

A truck was swallowed b a sinkhole in Japan's Yashio City on Tuesday morning.

The 10-meter-wide hole, believed to be caused by a sewage pipe rupture, left the driver trapped, who was able to speak to rescuers that were later forced to move away due to the ground becoming unstable. Rescue efforts were complicated by a second sinkhole nearby, discovered early on Wednesday.

Authorities have issued an evacuation advisory for residents within 200 meters, fearing further ground collapse and potential gas leaks. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
