Officials say the fire broke out Thursday when some passengers were preparing breakfast on the speeding train in violation of rules.

The death toll from a massive fire on a passenger train in Pakistan caused by a cooking gas stove has risen to 46 near the town of Liaquatpur in eastern Punjab.

Rescue workers and firefighters were working to extinguish the fire on the train, which was headed toward Rawalpindi from Karachi.

Officials say the fire broke out Thursday when some passengers were preparing breakfast on the speeding train in violation of rules.
