From the European Parliament, Raw Politics Your Call tackled the issues around discontent in Europe on Tuesday in the wake of protests in France and UK MPs requesting police protection.

There was a mixed response from viewers on Facebook over the Gilets Jaunes 'Yellow Vest' protesters, who either supported them or labelled them as 'thugs'.

Once caller in Modena in Italy said "people have the right to protest" and the focus should instead be on where the problems lie.

Greek MEP Eva Kali told the show: "peaceful protests would be more efficient" than the riots that have broken out and that the demonstrations are now being "manipulated" for extreme party gain.

The Telegraph's Brussels Correspondent James Crisp said that President Emmanuel Macron had handled the protests "badly" after he apologised for certain policies and then created a new law to crack down on the demonstrations.

Crisp said instead a current law should be used to penalise the violent demonstrators.
