It was an icy party in central Bulgaria on Sunday as residents of Kalofer took part in traditional epiphany celebrations.

The lucky person who picks up a wooden cross thrown by the local priest is guaranteed a healthy new year according to Orthodox custom.

The bagpipe playing folk singing festivities were banned in the communist era - but are now seen as a part of the nation’s cultural heritage.
