Russia's unexpectedly successful performance and 19-year-old Frenchman Kylian Mbappe's star turn went down in history at this year's World Cup tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s last-gasp equaliser in Portugal’s 3-3 draw with Spain was one of the highlights of the early matches, but it wasn't enough to stop his side from leaving the tournament in the last 16 alongside Lionel Messi's Argentina, stopped in their tracks by a rejuvenated French team, epitomised by Mbappe.

This year's competition also saw England reach the semi-final stage for the first time in 28 years.
