Former 'Sex and the City' star Cynthia Nixon is running for governor of New York state.

Nixon says she's a progressive alternative to incumbent Andrew Cuomo, who she labelled a "centrist" and political insider.
In a campaign ad posted on Twitter, Nixon says "We want our government to work again " and described New York state as the most unequal state in the country.
The openly-gay Nixon has called on Democrats nationwide to carve out a strong liberal identity instead of being merely the "anti-Trump party."
But she has a steep hill to climb before September's Democratic primary. A recent poll favoured Cuomo 66 percent to 19 percent over Nixon.
