Thousands of fans and players from the world of Italian football pay tribute to defender who died suddenly on Sunday.

Thousands of fans and players from the world of Italian football have paid their respects to Davide Astori.

The defender's untimely death left Italy in shock and mourners held up their scarves outside Florence's Basilica di Santa Croce in tribute during his funeral in Florence.

Astori was found dead in his hotel room, hours before his team Fiorentina were due to play Udinese in Sunday's Serie A fixture.All of the league's seven games that day were postponed as a result.

Italian prosecutors have suggested the 31-year-old suffered a fatal cardiac arrest by natural causes.

Some of the biggest names in Italian football joined Astori's Fiorentina teammates for the sombre ceremony.

Astori, who won 14 caps for Italy, is survived by his partner and their 2-year-old daughter.
