In the United States, Democrat Doug Jones, has won the Senate seat in the deeply conservative southern state of Alabama.

The stunning upset makes him the first Democrat in the state to be elected to the Senate in a quarter-century and will trim the Republicans' majority in the chamber to just two seats. The result increases the chances of the Democrats retaking the chamber in next year's congressional elections.

The campaign, which split the Republican party, was marked by accusations of sexual misconduct against their candidate Roy Moore.

His defeat is a blow to Donald Trump, who endorsed Moore despite accusations from several women that he had pursued them in their teens when he was in his 30s.

Moore, a Christian conservative, has denied the allegations and said he did not know any of the women concerned.

He is a former federal prosecutor and had portrayed the campaign as a referendum on decency.
