European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker’s heaping praise on Germany’s finance minister, amid a debate on the future shape of the 19 country eurozone.

As Wolfgang Schauble celebrates his 75th birthday, Juncker says he is a man who can help steady the ship when it comes to the Euro.

Referring to the Euro, Juncker said: “it’s not a normal situation in Europe, where so many opposites exist, trying to paper over the differing opinions. In the end, you only get shaky compromises but no solutions. Wolfgang Schäuble is a man of compromise, because compromises are part and parcel of democracy. But, above all, he is a man of solutions.”

In his recent State of the Union speech, Juncker said the EU should have a minister of economy and finance, but no separate eurozone budget or parliament – and that minister should
be the chairman of all eurozone finance ministers.

It is thinking backed by French President Emmanuel Macron, who is expected to unveil more details about proposed reforms after the German elections later this month.
