Away from the politicians and podiums these were Nice’s tributes to the victims of last July’s terror attacks.
A message spelling out the motto of the French republic was laid out on the Promenade Des Anglais, the waterfront avenue where a truck ploughed into revellers celebrating Bastille Day, killing 86 people.
The words – which mean equality, liberty and brotherhood – were constructed using 12-thousand panels.
The city also lit up 86 waterfront lights into the night sky on Friday – one for each of the victims of the attack.
