An explosion outside a nursery school in eastern China killed at least seven people and injured more than 60 others on Thursday, according to authorities.

Parents were collecting youngsters at around 5 p.m. when it happened in Fengxian county in the coastal province of Jiangsu.

It is unclear what went wrong. Initial unconfirmed reports suggest the blast may have been caused by a gas canister.

Two people died on the spot and five more died of their injuries, the official Xinhua news agency said.

It is not known how many casualties were children.

This is China’s second school tragedy in as many months. In May, 11 pupils died in a bus fire which authorities claimed the driver started deliberately.
