The Quick-Step rider managed to beat another former race winner, Team Sky’s Michal Kwiatowski in a sprint for the line.
A twelve rider breakaway dominated much of the race which saw the riders face the historic Cauberg climb three times.
But the last climb of the day was the gentler Bemeleberg with around five kilometres remaining.
Gilbert and Kwiatowski broke away from a leading group of seven riders on the climb and after two hundred and sixty four kilometres in the saddle.
Gilbert stayed on the Pole’s wheel when he launched his sprint two hundred metres from the line.
Then, in the last fifty metres Gilbert edged past to take first place.
