Three members of the same family are among four people who have been killed by an avalanche in the French ski resort Tignes

Three members of the same family are among four people who have been killed by an avalanche in the French ski resort Tignes.

The bodies of a father, his two teenage sons and their experienced guide were recovered after the avalanche struck at around 11am local time in the off-piste area of Tovière.

A fifth person is being treated after being pulled from the snow by search teams.

Emergency services said the victims were swept away by a massive wall of snow, reported to have stretched 400 metres across.

Helicopters and dogs have been engaged in the search.
