Kosovo has called for the immediate release of its former prime minister Ramush Haradinaj after his arrest by French police.

Kosovo has called for the immediate release of its former prime minister Ramush Haradinaj after his arrest by French police. He has been detained based on an international warrant issued by Serbia in 2004.

Haradinaj was a guerilla commander during the 1998-99 Kosovo war and Serbia considers him a war criminal for his role in leading the insurgency in its former province.

Kosovo declared itself independent in 2008.

Haradinaj who was travelling on a diplomatic passport when he was stopped has been tried and acquitted twice at the UN court in The Hague for war crimes.
