Paris’ Opéra Bastille is featuring Offenbach’s masterpiece, “Les contes d’Hoffmann” during November. Soprano Ermonela Jaho spoke to Euronews.

“This job of mine is not just a job, it’s therapy, it’s catharsis each time I’m on stage… in the life we all lead today being able to ‘dream’ on stage is such a gift… I must confess that I experience it as the first and last moment of my life. When I think of it this way my expectations fall to zero, I stop worrying about what people think of my singing, and tell myself: ‘this is my moment, I’ll try and give my best ever, and live it to the very last’.”

“There are nights when you totally lose control, but this shouldn’t compromise the sound; our duty is to accomplish ‘our mission’ to the end, I should never forget the rational side, and that I am a singer. I have always tried to be as true as possible, without losing control totally, though; thanks to hard work, day in day out, I can manage the two, control and emotion, which is true… those tears are genuine.”
