Angelique Kerber put on a spirited performance to beat Karolina Pliskova and win her first US Open title.

Angelique Kerber put on a spirited performance to beat Karolina Pliskova and win her first US Open title.

Her Czech opponent made a nervous start and was broken in her first service game.

Kerber was in cruise control and held on to win the first set 6-3.

But Pliskova refused to lie down and battled back to take the second set 6-4.

It was the first time Kerber had lost a set in this tournament.

The third set both players break one another but it was Kerber who came out on top to win the title 6-3 4-6, 6-4.
