World Swimming’s governing body FINA has banned seven Russian swimmers from competing at next month’s Rio Olympics.

The decision comes a day after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ruled against imposing a blanket ban on Russian athletes at the Games, which start on August 5.

After their ruling, the IOC added the decision to ban athletes from Rio would be the responsibility of the individual sports federations.

Russian swimmers Mikhail Dovgalyuk, Natalia Lovtcova and Anastasia Krapivina were also withdrawn.

Nikita Lobintsev, Vladimir Morozov and Daria Ustinova are ineligible to compete in Rio as their names appeared in a recent World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Independent Person report, which established Russia had operated a state-sponsored doping programme for four years across the “vast majority” of summer and winter Olympic sports.
