Jubilant Italian supporters described their team’s performance in their opening match of Euro 2016 as “vintage best”. Watching from the fanzone in the centre of the French city of Lyon they eagerly celebrated their teams 2-0 win over Belgium.

“ We were very good, defending and attacking. Buffon, you’re a super goalkeeper! Italy was wonderful!” said one woman.

For supporters of much-fancied Belgium’s Red Devils, there was dismay mixed with optimism.

“I’m a little bit disappointed, but they played well. They still have two matches and I think we can qualify. We’ll meet them at the final,” said one die-hard fan.

Our reporter Cinzia Rizzi, was also there enjoying the atmosphere:

“Italians are celebrating here in the fanzone in Place Bellecour. Despite being fewer in number than the Belgians they are making much more noise, after their important victory. The Red Devils now want to get even, on Saturday against Ireland.”
