Scandal-hit FIFA has fired its deputy secretary general, Markus Kattner, with immediate effect, after he was accused of paying himself bonuses worth millions of euros.

The 45-year-old German took over as acting general secretary in September after Jerome Valcke was sacked
for ethics breaches.

Kattner joined FIFA as director of finance in 2003 and took on his present role four years later.

He has yet to be charged with a crime but his dismissal is another blow to fifa’s reputation as it tries to recover from a corruption scandal over the past year that has rocked the organisation to its core.
