A 64-year-old man has become the first in the United States to undergo a successful penis transplant.
Thomas Manning underwent the operation in Massachusetts earlier this month. It was necessary due to his own having been amputated when he was diagnosed with penile cancer in 2012.

The operation took 15 hours and the organ was provided by a donor.

Doctors in South Africa became the first to perform the procedure successfully in 2014 after they attached a penis to a 21-year-old man whose organ had been amputated following a botched circumcision.
