Mark Cavendish won his second Tour of Qatar title on Friday by the slimmest of margins.
The Manxman – who rides for South African Team Dimension Data – entered the fifth and final 114 kilometre stage of the event with a two second advantage over Greg Van Avermaet of Belgium.
Despite a three man break that lasted most of the day, the stage ending in Doha Corniche was always going to be one for the sprinters.
After the break had been caught the teams and their lead-out trains were primed and ready for the mad dash for stage and potential title honours.
Norwegian Alexander Kristoff held off Cavendish in a thrilling finish for the win.
Cavendish’s second place finish, however, secured him the overall title a mere five seconds clear of Kristoff.
It was his second Qatar crown after his 2013 success.
