Thousands have taken to the streets of Italy in favour of same-sex civil unions.

Their chosen slogan was “Wake up Italy, it’s time to be civilised,” as marches took place across almost 100 towns and cities.

The debate over legal recognition for homosexual couples has heated up recently, with a bill due to be debated in parliament on January 28.

If passed, the bill would legalise civil partnerships for same-sex as well as unmarried, heterosexual couples.

Opponents see it as a stepping stone towards legalising gay marriage.
