Amid waning party support, acting President of Catalonia, Artur Mas says he will step down as the Spanish region’s pro-independence leader.

Disagreements between the pro-independence parties mean Catalonia has failed to form a government since September’s election.

The CUP and Junts pel Si had until Saturday to nominate a potential future President of Catalonia. They have agreed on current mayor of Girona, Carles Puigdemont.

If the coalition had been undecided on Mas’ successor, the regional parliament would have been dissolved and snap elections called.
