JANUARY

1 – EU PRESIDENCY

The Hague • The Netherlands holds the EU presidency for 6 months. It will be followed by Slovakia from the 1st of July.

11 – FRANCE ANNIVERSARY

Paris • Ceremonies to mark one year since the Charlie Hebdo attacks and the hostage crisis in Paris. A gathering is expected in Place de la République in Paris on the 10th and the French President is to give an address on the 11th.

12 – USA OBAMA

Washington DC • Barack Obama to deliver his State of the Union address in Congress, the last of his mandate.

20-23 – SWITZERLAND WORLD ECONOMY

Davos • World Economic Forum annual meeting.

FEBRUARY

1 – USA CAUCUSES

Iowa • Both Democratic and Republican caucuses in Iowa. This is the first electoral event of the nominating process for President of the USA. The presidential elections is due in November.

18-19 – EU SUMMIT – BREXIT

Brussels • European leaders meet. A EU-UK deal on reforms is needed to prevent a Brexit. An in-or-out referendum will occur some time between June 2016 and end of 2017.

26 – IRAN ELECTIONS

Tehran • Iranians go to the polls to elect the Parliament and the Assembly of Experts.

26 – FIFA PRESIDENT

Zurich • World’s football governing body will elect its next president.

28 – USA OSCARS

Hollywood • The Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

MARCH

5 – SLOVAKIA ELECTION

Bratislava • Parliamentary election. Prime Minister Robert Fico seeks a third term in office.

14 – EXOMARS

Baikonour • Launch of ESA-Roscomos’s ExoMars 2016 mission.

15 – SYRIA CONFLICT

Syria • 5 years since the Syrian conflict started.

APRIL

Early April – IRELAND ELECTION

Dublin • General election. Irish voters will elect the members of the 32nd Dáil who will assemble shortly afterwards to elect a Taoiseach.

21 – UK QUEEN

London • Queen Elizabeth II turns 90. Main celebrations due in May (12-15).

MAY

11-22 – FRANCE CINEMA

Cannes • 69th Cannes Film Festival.

14 – SWEDEN EUROVISION

Stockholm • Eurovision song contest.

23-24 – TURKEY SUMMIT

Istanbul • First World Humanitarian Summit. The purpose of the summit is to set a forward-looking agenda for humanitarian action to collectively address future humanitarian challenges.

Shima • Japan hosts the summit of the Group of Seven

JUNE

1-SWITZERLAND TUNNEL

Saint Gotthard base tunnel • The world’s longest railway tunnel will officially open.

10 – EUROPE FOOTBALL

France • The 2016 UEFA European Championship is held in France from 10 June to 10 July. Spain are two-time defending champions.

23-24 – EU SUMMIT

Brussels • Europeans leaders meet for the European Council.

4 – JUPITER

Space • NASA’s Juno mission is scheduled to arrive at Jupiter.

8-9 – POLAND NATO

Warsaw • NATO summit with heads of state and government, foreign and defence ministers, high-ranking military, and 2 500 delegates.

18-21 – USA CONVENTION

Cleveland • Republican National Convention to nominate the Republican candidate to the US presidential election.

25-28 – USA CONVENTION

Philadelphia • Democratic National Convention to nominate the Democrat candidate to the US presidential election.

AUGUST

5- BRAZIL OLYMPICS

Rio de Janeiro • Olympic Games take place until the 21st.
