Some 30 thousand athletes from 42 different countries gathered in Sao Paolo on Thursday to take part in the 91st edition of the Saint Silvester Road race – the oldest and most prestigious street race in Brazil.

African runners once again dominated proceedings with Stanley Biwott taking the tape in the men’s race.

The Kenyan completed the 15 kilometre course in 44 minutes and 31 seconds.

In the women’s event the honours went to Ethiopia’s Ymer Ayalew who claimed the title for a second year running.

She stormed through the course in Brazil’s largest city and crossed the line on Paulista Avenue in 54 minutes and one second.
