One person has died and nine others have been injured in an avalanche in the remote Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard in the Arctic.

Snow from Sukkertoppen mountain overlooking the settlement smashed into houses on Saturday.

Hospital officials say two children and one adult are in a serious condition.
