Defeat for France’s far-right National Front party in three key target regions according to exit polls. Leader Marine Le Pen lost out to the Republicans and centre-right allies who took 57.5 percent of the vote in the northern region compared to Le Penn’s 42.5 percent.

In the south-east where her niece Marion Marechal-Le Pen was the FN’s lead candidate the conservatives scored 54.5 percent and the FN 45.5 percent the polls showed.

Marine Le Pen’s party came top in the first round last week and was leading in six of the 13 regions in mainland France.
