But some parents worry whether it is safe to have done so.
The Belgian capital remains on its highest level of alert: level four.
New security measures have been proposed for schools, including possible safe rooms in the event of an attack.
“The idea of having such a place in school when attack happens is a good one,” said Emir Kir, the mayor of the Saint Josse district. “But it’s not the priority. The priority is immediate measures to protect children and families.”
For some, it is unclear why officials feel it is safe to reopen the city’s schools.
Two key suspects from Brussels remain at large.
Until Monday, the alert level and the measures taken were coherent. So we could explain to people what was happening.
“Since Monday, Charles Michel has told us the threat remains the same; we stick to level four but we’ll reopen the schools. It seems to be a bit paradoxical,” said Zakia Khattabi, a Green lawmaker sitting in the Brussels parliament.
The city will remain on its highest alert until next Monday when the governments plans to assess the situation.
