The Springboks, who were also third in 1999, controlled the tie at London’s Olympic Arena to end their bruising campaign on a high note.

JP Pietersen and Eben Etzebeth both crossed over and Handre Pollard added 14 points for Heyneke Meyer’s side while Juan Pablo Orlandi touched down at the death for the Puma’s to save some face.

But it was too little far too late as the Boks went on to enjoy a 24-13 victory.
