At least five people have died after storms in central Italy caused major flooding and landslides.

Italian news agency ANSA reported a 70-year-old woman died when water flooded her home after torrential rain in the Italian province of Benevento.

An elderly man suffering from heart disease reportedly died while clearing out flood debris in the same region.

Cars were submerged, shops inundated by mud and basements flooded.

Italian authorities are on high alert for further flooding and landslides in southern regions.

According to forecasts, the weather should improve on Friday (October 16).
