The first Democratic debate in Las Vegas on Tuesday night was widely commented on online. There was more than 2.3 million mentions of hashtags related to the debate during the programme, according to social intelligence platforme Synthesio.
Hillary Clinton received the most mentions, with almost 40,3% of the all mentions of the debate. Socialist Democratic US senator Bernie Sanders received about 28%. The three other Democratic presidential hopefuls all scored under 15%.

Only a few days after the shooting on a community college in Roseburg, Ore, gun control was the most-talked about topic online, with 26.4% of all topic mentions. Education, a domain Sanders suggests need complete overhaul, including making it free, was in second place with 19.2% of the mention.

Overall, 14.2% of the mentions about the debate were positive, according to Synthesio, versus 12.8% of negative mentions.
