Violence flared in Brazil’s biggest city, Sao Paulo, on Thursday, as police moved in to evict dozens of families from a slum district.

Angry locals threw stones and set fire to vehicles. Security forces responded with tear gas.

Police say residents had been living illegally at the slum in the city’s suburbs for years.
