Russia’s Inna Deriglazova celebrated her first individual World title in the foil discipline on Thursday after beating compatriot Aida Shanaeva.

Fighting on home soil in Moscow 25-year-old Deriglazova who won bronze two years ago in Budapest, dominated the final stages of the contest to eventually win through 15-11.

Her victory broke Italy’s six year stranglehold on the title although Italy’s Arianna Errigo took bronze along with American Nzingha Prescod.

In the men’s foil event Yuki Ota also enjoyed his first individual world title when he got the better of American Alexander Massialas.

The Japanese fencer – who won Olympic silver in 2008 – got off to a fine start and never relinquished the lead as he won through 15-10.

The two bronze medals went to American Gerek Meinhardt and home hope Artur Akhmatkuzin.
