The death toll from a cruise ship that capsized on the Yangtze river has risen to 396 according to a Chinese government spokesman.

Only 14 of the 456 people on board have been found alive, including the captain, after the Eastern Star overturned in what was described as a freak tornado on Monday night.

It took until Friday to right the four-deck vessel and it has now been raised from the riverbed as searches continue.

More a thousand family members have come to Jianli in the central Hubei province, where the ship went down, many expressing frustration at the lack of information from the government.

Beijing has promised “No cover up” in an official investigation.
