Switzerland’s Roger Federer crashed out of the French Open after he was beaten in straight sets by fellow countryman Stan Wawrinka on Tuesday.

The 33- year-old committed 15 unforced errors to Wawrinka’s five and was broken twice as he lost 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 while local favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga battled past Kei Nishikori in five sets to reach the semi-finals.

In the women’s event, Ana Ivanovic also progressed with a 6-3 6-2 win over Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina. The 2008 champion looked in great shape and dominated her opponent from the outset to make it through to the semis where she will take on Lucie Safarova.

The Czech player, who edged out defending champion Maria Sharapova on Monday, downed Garbine Muguruza 7-6 6-3.
