There were clashes in Moscow as gay rights activists tried to hold an unofficial demonstration on Saturday.

They were attacked by a group of Russian nationalists, who used pepper spray against the campaigners outside the city hall.

Police who had been ready at the scene intervened and arrested several demonstrators from both sides.
