Teachers in France went on strike on Tuesday and demonstrated against planned reforms.

The country’s 840,000 teachers oppose to the plans, the unions say, fearing they will increase competition between schools and lead to inequalities.

They could also lead to teachers performing tasks outside of their training.

The reforms to secondary education aims to give schools more choices over what they can teach, promote interdisciplinary learning and combat elitism.

Schooling is an especially sensitive subject in France because it prides itself on equal access to education.
