King Felipe VI has visited European Institutions in Brussels. He was greeted by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in what was the monarch’s first trip to the political heart of the European Union since he acceded to the Spanish throne in June.

He discused a variety of political issues with MEPs and for the first time had an unexpected one-to-one meeting with Pablo Iglesias the leader of Podemos the anti-austerity party.

The pony-tailed politician broke protocol to present Felipe VI with a box set of ‘Game of Thrones’. Despite the unorthodox approach the Spanish monarch appeared amused by the gesture. “That’s great I haven’t seen it,” said the King.

Later the Podemos leader told reporters he had presented the DVDs so that the King, “would understand the key points of the political crisis in Spain”.
