A food truck fire has triggered a security alert at the White House in Washington.

The vehicle, in a nearby street, created a loud bang – just before President Barack Obama and his family were due to take off in a helicopter from the presidential mansion’s South Lawn.

The White House was put into a security lockdown.

A Secret Service spokesman said the fire had been contained and that a vehicle near the White House was being investigated after a bomb-sniffing dog detected something on it.

The president and his family left the White House by motorcade instead and boarded Air Force One at Andrews Air Force Base.

The Obamas were travelling to Selma, Alabama, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of a civil rights march.
