FIFA president Sepp Blatter has confirmed that the 2022 Qatar World Cup showpiece match should be played no later than December 18.

The 78-year-old, who was in Belfast for this weekend’s International Football Association Board meeting, also rejected any possibility of clubs being compensated.

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that the tournament would be moved to winter due to scorching summer temperatures in Qatar, setting football’s world governing body on a collision course with the major European leagues.

A final decision will be made by the FIFA executive committee at a meeting which will take place in Zurich on March 19-20.
