People in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv have been reacting to the events in Debaltseve.

Feelings are running high as it is the anniversary of the deaths of 76 people at a demonstration in the city a year ago, virtually all of them unarmed.

No one has yet been charged with the shootings but it is believed elements of the special police were responsible.

Opinions on the events in Debaltseve were mixed.

“No matter what we can’t give away this strategic place. If I’m honest I wouldn’t want this withdrawal”, said one man.

But another man thought differently:

“If people are dying Debaltseve has to be given up. Then, later, this issue can be solved peacefully.”

This woman is concerned about the fate of the disarmed Ukrainian troops:

“If our soldiers are just standing there with only their bare hands and no right to shoot back, then if they are killed that is just plain murder of our nation’s elite.”
