Heavy rain has lead to severe flooding in Greece, Albania and the former Yugoslavian republic of Macedonia. (FYROM)

In one region troops were drafted in to help framers and to shore up defences after rivers burst their banks

A state of emergency has been put in place in much of eastern FYROM and parts of northern and central Greece, where the 19th century Plaka Bridge – one of the largest single-arch stone bridges in Europe- was damaged over the weekend by raging floodwaters in the northwestern region of Epirus.

So far there have been no casualties reported.
